Warangal sits at the heart of Telangana and hides some of the most rewarding rides in South India. UNESCO temples, serene lakes, ancient forts, and wildlife sanctuaries — all within 100 km of Hanamkonda. Here are the five routes every two-wheeler rider should cover.

1. Ramappa Temple — 77 km from Hanamkonda

🏛️ Ramappa Temple (UNESCO World Heritage Site)

📍 Palampet, Mulugu District🛣️ 77 km from Hanamkonda⏱ ~2 hrs ride

Built in 1213 CE by the Kakatiyas, Ramappa is one of the finest examples of medieval Deccan architecture and was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2021. The temple's floating bricks — made light enough to float on water — are an engineering marvel 800 years ahead of their time.

Best time to visit: Early morning (6–9 AM) before the crowds arrive. The light on the stone carvings at sunrise is extraordinary.

Route tip: Take NH163 via Warangal and then the Mulugu road. The last 20 km is a smooth state highway through forested hills — one of the best riding stretches in Telangana.

2. Pakhal Lake — 50 km from Warangal

🌊 Pakhal Lake Wildlife Sanctuary

📍 Warangal Rural District🛣️ 50 km from Warangal⏱ ~1.5 hrs ride

A 40 sq km artificial lake built by the Kakatiya dynasty in 1213 CE, Pakhal Lake is surrounded by forest and frequented by migratory birds. The sanctuary around it houses tigers, leopards, and hundreds of bird species — making this a proper nature ride.

Best time: October to February for wildlife sightings and pleasant weather.

Route tip: Road from Warangal to Pakhal is mostly smooth. Carry water — fuel stations are sparse after the first 30 km.

3. Thousand Pillar Temple — 3 km from Hanamkonda

🏯 Thousand Pillar Temple, Hanamkonda

📍 Hanamkonda, Warangal🛣️ 3 km from Garuda HQ⏱ 10 min ride

Built in 1163 CE, this is one of the finest examples of Kakatiya architecture. Three shrines dedicated to Shiva, Vishnu, and Surya share a single star-shaped platform with over a thousand intricately carved pillars. Easily the most underrated temple complex in Telangana.

Best for: First-time visitors to Warangal. Combine with Warangal Fort (5 km away) for a full heritage day.

4. Warangal Fort — 6 km from Hanamkonda

🏰 Warangal Fort

📍 Warangal City🛣️ 6 km from Hanamkonda⏱ 15 min ride

The ruins of the Kakatiya capital. Four ornamental gateways — the Kakatiya Kala Thoranas — frame a circular fort that once held a city of a million people. The scale of what remains is staggering. The central gate has become the symbol of Telangana state.

Evening tip: The fort is lit up at night and can be viewed from outside even after closing hours. Worth a slow evening ride around the perimeter.

5. Eturnagaram Wildlife Sanctuary — 90 km from Hanamkonda

🐯 Eturnagaram Wildlife Sanctuary

📍 Mulugu District🛣️ 90 km from Hanamkonda⏱ ~2.5 hrs ride

The largest wildlife sanctuary in Telangana at 803 sq km. Dense teak forests, the Godavari tributary cutting through, and a genuine chance of spotting bison, wild boar, deer, and if you're very lucky — a tiger. The road through the sanctuary is one of the most scenic in the state.

Full day trip: Start at 6 AM, reach by 8:30 AM, spend 3–4 hours inside, back by evening. Take the Royal Enfield for this one — 180 km return is most comfortable on a bigger bike.
